Manliness
March 5th, 2007
So last week, Casey and I enjoyed a nice lunch break while being serenaded by Andrew Peterson, Andy Gullahorn, and Ben Shive. It was quite a show. But the focus of this entry isn’t so much that I enjoyed the concert, the focus is on my empathy at this moment for the one song Andy Gullahorn shared with us. For those of you who don’t know this brilliant songwriter, you might be surprised to know that you have likely heard his music; having written songs for his wife Jill Phillips, Alathea, Kim Hill, Ben Glover, and Chris Tomlin, just to mention a few. So this was an Andrew Peterson show, and like I said, it was awesome. But he passed the mic to Gullahorn who proceeded to share a song about manliness. Unfortunately, I can’t find it anywhere online, but it was based on his youthful days growing up in Texas, rearing cattle and hunting and killing animals. And the older he gets (married, children, early to bed), the less manly he feels. Now I’ve never done any real farm work or been hunting. I don’t even pretend to think that I was ever once that manly. But like Andy, I feel as though that what little amount of rugged manliness I might have had is now slipping away. You see, last week was my 25th Birthday, and from both sets of parents (blood and in-law), I received gifts related to cooking. That’s right, a cookbook from my mom (because I called and asked her how to boil an egg) and a griddle from my mother-in-law (because I cook pancakes on Saturday morning for Casey and I). So here’s to you Andy Gullahorn, I’m crying with you.
